Hernandez Widely Criticized Throughout His Career Ends 33 Year Umpiring Stint

Umpire Angel Hernandez Announces Retirement from MLB

Hernandez, widely criticized throughout his career, ends 33-year umpiring stint.

Controversial umpire to leave field after 2022 season.

Angel Hernandez, one of baseball's most controversial umpires, has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball (MLB) after 33 years of officiating. Hernandez has been widely criticized for his in-game calls, including a failed lawsuit against MLB for racial discrimination.

Despite the criticism, Hernandez remained one of MLB's longest-serving umpires. In 2022, he was ranked as the lowest-rated umpire with at least 10 games officiated. However, he had a successful career, officiating in four World Series and two All-Star Games.

Hernandez's retirement comes as a surprise to many in the baseball community. He had previously expressed his desire to continue umpiring and had been expected to return for the 2023 season.
